Putting up fences and gates are inexpensive ways to increase your property value, improve the appearance of your property, and protect your yard from getting trampled on by friends, family, and pets.  If you live in high traffic areas then a fence or gate can also be a safety measure to keep your children or pets from wandering into the street and being hit by vehicles traveling the road in front of, behind, or beside your house.

Your first decision is going to be where to place your fence or gate.  As stated above, if you live in high traffic areas then you are going to want to place a fence or gate between the road and your yard to prevent your children or pets from wandering into the road.  You will want to make sure that your fence or gate is high enough so that your children and pets cannot jump over or climb the fence or gate to get to the other side.

Another place to put up a fence or gate would be around your backyard, especially if you have neighbors.  Fencing in your backyard will help keep your children or pets from wandering out of your yard and into your neighbor’s yards.  It will also prevent neighbor’s children from wandering out of their yards and into yours.  Fences and gates around your backyard will also enable you to allow your children and pets to play in the backyard without your constant supervision.

If you have a garden or flower bed, you might also consider placing a fence or gate around it to keep your children, pets, or other animals from getting in and destroying all of your hard work.  A garden or flower bed is usually pretty muddy especially right after watering, so placing a fence or gate around it to keep the children, pets, or other animals out, also prevents little feet from tracking dirt and mud into your home.

You might want to also consider placing a fence or gate between your driveway and your home.  If your driveway has a fair amount of traffic in and out of it, then a fence or gate can be placed separating it from your yard or home as a safety precaution.  This will prevent your children or pets from wandering out of the yard and into the driveway where they can be hit by vehicles pulling in and out.

Remember, a fence or gate can improve the appearance of your property, be a safety measure used to protect your family and pets from any harm, and protect your garden or flower beds from destruction.  They are fairly easy to put up and they come in a variety of colors and heights to provide the level of protection needed.

Basic tips for interior lighting installation

Interior lighting installation is a very wide them but I will try to talk about one of the most popular topics which is installing a light switch. I personally think that installing a light switch is a great challenge for me because I feel certain respect for electricity since I get an electric shock someday installing a light switch but I am completely sure you aren’t afraid about electricity. Remember turn off the power button or switch which is located in your electrical service panel so that you don’t get any kind of problems. It is good that you make this kind of installation while your wife or children are out of home because it will turn off the whole electric system of your house.  If you have any doubt (like me that never trust in electricity) you could remove the main breaker or fuse that control the whole panel. Now that you have this completed let’s see some further steps so that you can have your light switch well installed.

Working with some type of switches: There are three basic types of switch that you can go to the store and purchase the type of switch that fit with your taste or need. Basically you will find the toggle switch, the mercury switch that is widely used everywhere and the silence switch which is my favorite.

Installing the silent switch at home: As I told you it is my favorite switch type because is simple to operate and install. The silent switch has a steel spring armature that when is pressed by a soft button. For installation purposes you should connect the wire which should be located from the main source (which is the light bulb) to the place where you have located the light switch. No matter the switch type you are using, all of them can have the same type of installation and the main difference is the kind of light bulb you are going to use so that cables can fit with the light switch. Once you complete the installation process you should turn on again the main electric switch.

Securing Your Home and Family

The world we live in today is very different than when I was growing up.  I grew up in a time where it was normal to leave your keys in the car and the doors to your home rarely got locked even at night.  There was no fear or concern about letting the children play outside after dark or venture out of the yard without adult supervision.  Things sure have changed since then.

Today, we hear news reports on children being kidnapped in the middle of the night right out of their own beds, sometimes with the parents asleep in the very next room.  We hear stories about break-ins occurring while we are away from home even when we have taken security precautions such as locking the doors and windows before leaving.  We also hear of attempted kidnappings of children as they are walking to or from the bus stops before and after school.  We are left wondering what we can do to protect our families.

Here are a few things that we can do in an attempt to keep our homes and our families as safe as possible.  Start by removing your car keys and locking the doors of your vehicle whenever the car is not being used, especially at night when you are getting ready to go to bed.  A car thief may still be able to break in and hotwire your car but it will take them longer to steal it if the car is locked and the keys have been removed.  The longer it takes them to steal your car, the more chance they take of someone seeing what they are doing and having time to call the police.

Lock your doors and windows at night before going to bed.  These measures make it more difficult for a burglar or kidnapper to gain access into your home while you are in bed asleep.  You might also consider leaving at least one light on inside the house or installing a motion detector outside light.  A burglar or kidnapper might be less likely to come near your home if there are lights on that could expose them to your neighbors or people driving by your home.

Sit down and have a serious discussion with your children about not talking to strangers, not getting into cars with strangers, and alerting school staff, bus drivers, or police in the event that they have been approached by a stranger.  You might also want to consider having your children walk to and from school or a bus stop with a friend or sibling as there is safety in numbers.

We don’t want to raise our children to feel like they are living in a prison, or to be terrified to leave our sight, but we do want our children to be cautious of their surroundings and the people they might come in contact with.

Dressing Up Your Family Room

Typically, your family room is the room in your house that sees the most traffic and gets used the most.  This is the room that usually holds your television set, VCR or DVD player, movies, games, and stereos.  Since this is the one room in your house that will get used the most, you want to make sure that this room is also the most comfortable room in your house for your friends and family members.

With the economic crisis we are in right now, there are many families who don’t have a lot of extra money to spend remodeling or redecorating their family rooms.  For those of you are feeling the tightening of the money belt, here are a few ideas on how to dress up your family room without having to spend a huge amount of money.

First, start by placing a large area rug on the floor in the middle of the room.  This will provide a well padded place to sit or stretch out when your children have their friends over for a night of game playing or movie watching.  Place heavy yet decorative curtains over the windows so you won’t experience a sunny glare on the television screen while watching movies or playing games.  For soft lighting, consider using two floor lamps with low voltage light bulbs placed in two corners of the room rather than using the higher voltage light bulbs from a ceiling fan or overhead light.

Once the floor and lighting issues have been taken care of, you could consider adding some oversized decorative pillows that can be used on the couch, chair, or floor for extra cushioning, resting your feet on, or lying on.  If you don’t really care for pillows, you could always invest in some beanbag chairs for the kids to lie on or sit in while watching movies or playing games.

Dedicate one wall of the room to bookshelves or storage shelves to hold movies, games and game controllers, and music CDs.  Make sure that the bookshelves or storage shelves are easily accessible for the children so they can reach their movies, games, game controllers, and music CDs on their own.  You don’t want to put everything too far out of reach to where the children might attempt to climb up the bookshelves or storage shelves to reach what they want and end up falling and getting hurt.

A family room should be a place that provides a comfortable and safe atmosphere for everyone to enjoy watching movies, playing games, and listening to music.  A family room can also serve as the resting place of many when your children have friends over for slumber parties.  So, redesign your family room into a place where your children and their friends will love to hang out.
